Ferring Research Institute, Inc. (FRI) is the center of excellence for peptide research for Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Established in 1996, FRI now occupies a state-of-the-art research facility in Sorrento Valle, San Diego. Director of Chemistry (Newly Created Position)

Description: At the frontier between chemistry and biology, this key position is responsible for planning, prioritizing and leading the activities of a highly critical unit that identifies new peptide chemical entities and supports their development. This highly interactive position interfaces with all Research departments as well as with multiple R&D divisions. This individual must keep abreast of technology and can assess opportunities for the company’s scientific and strategic goals. It is viewed as a source of scientific expertise within and outside the organization.
   
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Developing and maintaining state of the art peptide medicinal chemistry research at Ferring
  • Translating drug discovery Target Product Profile in chemistry objectives and strategy
  • Supervising, monitoring and guiding all peptide SAR programs and drug discovery processes at large
  • Supervising, monitoring and guiding selection of peptide clinical candidates
  • Coordinating with multi-disciplinary Research Teams
  • Transferring of CMC know-how from Research to Early Stage Development
  • Supporting feasibility programs
  • Participating in R&D Governance processes
  • Coordinating chemistry publications and communications
   
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry
  • 10+ years’ experience in medicinal chemistry in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Proven, successful track record in guiding, developing and motivating experienced scientific teams
  • 5+ years’ management experience
  • Amino acid therapeutics expertise
  • Direct experience in translation of drug candidates to early development
  • Experience working with teams including in vitro and in vivo biology, bio-analysis, ADME, patenting, toxicology
  • Ability to articulate chemistry vision and strategy
  • Excellent communication skills (internal and external)

Description: The post-doctoral program is a 2 year commitment, offers a unique perspective into a world-class biotechnology company. It is an opportunity to work with distinguished scientists to gauge ones interest in pursuing a pharmaceutical research career. Compensation and benefits are competitive.
   
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Developing methods to isolate, characterize, sequence and quantitate metabolites of peptides drug candidates from biological matrices
  • Enzymology studies to determine the mechanism of biotransformation of the peptides
  • Use of advanced chromatographic, electrophoretic, and mass spectrometric techniques to achieve the above objectives is expected
  • The information will be used to develop better SAR models and develop newer generation drug candidates
  • Review literature and develop in vitro models to predict SC release of peptide drug candidates
   
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, proteomics or related areas
  • Experience in chromatography and mass spectrometry (iontraps, triple quads) will be required
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative proteomics methods would be desirable
  • Knowledge of drug metabolism, parenteral absorption, sustained release formulations is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills are required for the team environment in the Institute

Director of New Projects (Newly Created Position)

Description:

At the frontier between biology and medicine, this key position is responsible for all new projects, both peptide and protein therapeutics, for Ferring specialty core therapeutic areas (gastroenterology, reproductive health, urology) and neighboring areas (hepatology, OB/GYN, uro/oncology). This position is critical to feed the Research pipeline with new projects and requires regular interaction with all Research departments as well as with multiple R&D locations. This individual must keep abreast of technology and assess opportunities for the company’s scientific and strategic goals. The internal focus of this position is applied research and peptide drug discovery. In addition, this individual establishes and grows external collaborations for basic research and protein drug discovery.

The New Projects Unit currently is composed of three senior pharmacologists, five research associates and one post-doctoral fellow and is expected to grow to about 18-20 employees by 2015.

   
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Establish proper processes for New Projects pipeline Management
  • Ensure comprehensive inventory/mapping of new ideas and opportunities emerging from academia and competition
  • Scientific and business intelligence support (approved and developed drugs)
  • Knowledge mining technology support (basic research)
  • Prioritize and execute in depth dry evaluation and due diligence for best ideas
  • Prioritize and coordinate wet evaluation/feasibility studies
  • Ensure new project proposals for drug discovery
   
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in related discipline; M.D. highly desirable
  • 10+ years’ experience in target discovery and drug discovery in the biopharmaceutical industry, preferable in large biopharmaceutical companies and in one of Ferring’s core therapeutic areas (prefer urology)
  • Proven, successful experience in conceiving, building and managing pipeline of research projects for an entire franchise from target discovery to drug discovery
  • 5+ years’ Proven, successful track record in guiding, developing and motivating experienced scientific teams
  • Expertise in amino acid therapeutics
  • Global understanding of current state-of-the-art and emerging new science/technology in peptide and protein therapeutics both in academia and industry.
  • Excellent communication skills (internal and external)
