Our history

Our history has shaped us to evolve and grow into the dynamic and diverse research institute of today.

FRI first focused on the discovery of amino acid-based therapeutics utilizing the body’s signaling hormones.

Today FRI is committed to building a portfolio of novel, innovative therapeutics using a wide array of modalities to address areas of high unmet medical need in our core therapeutic areas.

Driving value through personalized medicine, FRI is an integral part of the Ferring Pharmaceuticals R&D organization, focusing on early drug discovery and development.

The Ferring Research Institute opened in San Diego in 1996. In February 2009, FRI relocated to its current 38,000-square-foot facility in Sorrento Valley.

An investment and expansion program is now underway at FRI, with completion in 2022.

This will deliver a state-of-the-art environment for scientific discovery to improve the capabilities and reach of Ferring’s early research.

Our founders

Our founders, Drs. Frederik Paulsen and Eva Frandsen continue to inspire our culture at FRI.

They shaped Ferring from the start and were determined we should access the best science internally and externally to develop the most innovative treatments for patients.

Today, we’re determined to build upon our internal excellence in drug discovery and development and to reenergize our efforts in seeking out the very best external scientific opportunities.
